Commercial Property Insurance Training

Overview

I created this scenario based interactive eLearning simulation about commercial property insurance as part of the interview process for a position at IIANC. This project trains insurance agents on the different kinds of commercial property insurance and how to select the best plan for customers.

Audience: Insurance Agents

Responsibilities: Video Creation, Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Visual Design, Sound Design

Tools Used: Synthesia, Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe Photoshop

For the best experience, try the insurance simulation multiple times to see how the consequences change based on the insurance plan the user chooses.

Problem and Solution

Insurance Agents are responsible for selecting the right insurance plans for their clients. They must know the importance of understanding the difference between direct and indirect property losses and the appropriate coverage forms.

The objective was to take a PowerPoint presentation and turn it into a compelling eLearning simulation using Articulate Storyline 360 and Synthesia. The project had specific criteria that had to be met:

- All text must be used word-for-word from the provided PowerPoint.

- Each selected slide in the PowerPoint must have a corresponding screen in Storyline.

- A Branching Scenario

- Interactive drag-and-drop categorization activity

- Use restricted navigation to ensure learners engage with all content.

- Include a menu or progress bar for structure.

- Recreate the multiple-choice knowledge check from the last slide in a graded format.

- Use alt text and proper tab order to show consideration for accessibility.

Process

First, I met with the Subject Matter Expert (SME), an a Learning and Development Specialist from IIANC. I listened carefully to her description of the project and took detailed notes, asking clarifying questions to help me better understand how Insurance Agents would use this information in the field.

I also did my own research on commercial property insurance and gathered resources for the project.

Next, I became familiar with Synthesia. I was excited to learn how to use this new AI tool to design and create realistic training videos with AI avatars. I mapped out which sections would be best suited for videos, and which would be best suited for interactive simulations or content in Storyline 360.

Finally, over the course of one week I combined all of the elements together in Articulate Storyline 360.

Original PowerPoint

Usually, during this part of the process I would create an action map and storyboard with the SME. But the requirements of the project were to use the PowerPoint presentation word for word, and not to stray from the script. This was challenging, but streamlined the process and allowed me to think how to best present the SME’s content.

Design

I made design choices based off of IIANC’s current color scheme and branding. I used resources provided by IIANC combined with realistic pictures both sourced from Image Artificial Intelligence creation tools and Articulate 360’s library.

Development

With the design elements in place, storyboard, action map, and conversation with the Subject Matter Expert I had a solid foundation to develop the project in Articulate Storyline 360 and Synthesia. I began by recreating the designs from Photoshop in Storyline. To create more engagement I utilized different layers, object states, variables, and custom triggers to create different ways the learner could interact with the material so that it didn’t become repetitive. I overcame obstacles through research and troubleshooting, and learned more about Storyline 360’s and Synthesia’s capabilities in the process. Throughout the process I tested each section and made iterative improvements. I edited down the videos and the content of the slides to streamline the presentation and make it more impactful. Finally, I play tested the content with my colleagues and peers and applied their feedback to the final product.

Results and Takeaways

I enjoyed learning more about commercial property insurance, and while I ultimately didn’t get the job, I learned a great deal about how to use Synthesia combined with Articulate Storyline 360 to create compelling training modules.

If I were to do the project again, I would have made a more interactive scenario similar my Financial Elder Abuse project with more branching paths, but had to come up with a more streamlined solution due to time constraints and working another full-time job.

I am thankful for the opportunity and I appreciate IIANC allowing me to use the project for my portfolio.
